2026 is Poised to Be Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my main revelation was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are taking over the industry.

A Legacy of Leaping

Amphibians have been far from new to the gaming landscape. Ever since the era of Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their popularity has markedly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are serious Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this trend, I undertook a detailed review into the recent history of frog-related gaming on Steam. My criteria was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings paint a clear picture: a steady rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's rising status in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely strong.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs offer natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Charming Creatures: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and prehensile tongues facilitate a myriad of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what is the outlook for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
