The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Playoff Battle Versus Tommy Fleetwood

Aaron Rai displayed exceptional composure to claim the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship on Sunday, beating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy final round of competition.

The Englishman nailed a decisive birdie from around eight foot to seal the victory, repeating his sole prior Rolex Series triumph at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff victory over the same opponent.

Final Round Drama

Rai entered the last day with a single stroke lead over countryman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He finished with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, 67 closing round that included seven birdie putts and two bogeys.

The challenger edged one shot ahead with the 16th and 17th to play after a birdie on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then failed to convert a 10-foot birdie putt to win outright on the final hole.

Play-Off Climax

That set up a playoff at the Yas Links course where Rai prevailed to take the championship and $1.5m (ÂŁ1.13m) in prize money.

{“Tommy is a world-class player and an even better person. To compete alongside him the last two days was truly memorable,” said Rai, the present world No 30. “You’re so focused on playing the round and maintaining focus, it’s hard to describe at the moment how it is. It is incredible to be stood here.”

Other Contenders

Rory McIlroy found himself a bit too far to make up, coming up one shot behind in a shared third place with Højgaard, after a spectacular 62 final round of 62. It was his lowest-ever round on the European Tour, including eight birdies and an eagle.

The Danish golfer carded six birdies of his as well, but his hopes of leading the leaderboard were hit by a bogey on the twelfth. England’s Richard Mansell hit an superb last round seven-under to end up tied for fifth with Australia’s Hillier.
